Gary, Dee, and Joe discuss Rank Choice Voting. Rank choice voting is a better way to vote. It gives everyone a voice. It eliminates negative advertising. It stops fringe candidates from winning. It has the side effect of a more involved electorate. In US cities where it is used, there is a higher voter turn out. It is the way voting is held in Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Australia, New Zealand, and Malta. It is also the way voting is held in some US cities. It is legal in Colorado and is being used in Telluride. It is used in Portland, Maine and will be used statewide in Maine, soon.
Rank choice voting can eliminate the need for primaries and run off ballots. (This saves time and money!) While rank choice voting may sound strange, it is really something we do everyday–when we decide which movie we might want to go see or where to eat dinner. We used an example of eating dinner with a large group of people for how rank choice voting might work. (If anyone wants to see the data for this, leave a message.) We had twenty three people choosing from six dinner options.
23 People picking a dinner: Chinese – 1, Pizza – 5, Tacos – 4, Sandwiches – 6, Sushi – 2, Chicken – 5. Through several rounds of elimination we got the result of: Tacos – 12, Pizza – 11. So, the result was everyone got Tacos. But, we only had one vote.
