Lyn and Dee discuss current events and news of the day. Our main topic this week is the Magnitsky Act. This piece of legislation was adopted in the US after Russian officials stole a hedge fund from UK citizen William Browder. His lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky exposed the corruption. For his work in defense of his client, he was jailed, beaten and left to die in Russia. The US and other countries enacted legislation to punish corrupt Russian officials by freezing their assets in western countries. The government of Russia retaliated by stopping foreign adoptions of Russian children. So, when you hear that Trump officials were discussing adoptions with Russian delegates, this is what they were talking about. We also discuss a new regulation on tipping being proposed by the Republican controlled Dept of Labor. Like many new regulations, this one is bad for poor and working people. We cover UK studies on immigration before the Brexit vote. Why were the results of these studies suppressed? What does the Dollar General expansion mean for the overall outlook of our own economy?
