U.S. Army veteran, David Brown, holds a BS in Computer Science worked odd jobs for his now father in law while his wife started her own daycare to be able to stay home with their young son. This resulted in a number of adoptions by his family. His family ended up moving to South Africa for a number of years while he executed overseas security contracts. After years of saving, he and his wife, Brenda, opened the doors to America’s single largest tattoo studio.

She’s grown up around car culture and now serves as the Director of Communications for Pikes Peak International Raceway and Falci Adaptive Motorsports. In her free time she drives her Ford Mustang, playing dog mom, traveling or discovering the region’s newest hot spots.

Marcus Alvarado is a digital marketer who marketed the first tiny home model to be featured on the HBA Parade of Homes in the country. The model received massive media attention from newspapers, radio, news stations and magazines. Eco Cabins ended up taking home the coveted 2014 Colorado Springs Parade of Homes’ People’s Choice Award.

In Summer 2018, he coordinated his own tiny house event (out-of-pocket) which drew in over 20,000 attendees and brought an estimated economic impact of $2.4 Million to the Colorado Springs economy. Today he focuses his efforts on making the festival an event that accurately gives patrons a taste of southern Colorado.

How to Assist Veterans Experiencing Homelessness with Kristen Bailey

Kristen Bailey is a Colorado native who now works as the Outreach Specialist and Volunteer Coordinator for the Homes for All Veterans Program of Rocky Mountain Human Services. She attended the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, and earned a bachelor’s degree in Sociology in 2011. After graduating, she became interested in working with the homeless community. She began volunteering with Urban Peak Colorado Springs, the local youth shelter, doing grant writing and development, and later was hired to work directly with the youth in the shelter. She left Urban Peak for her current case management position. She’s her agency’s representative for the Pikes Peak Continuum of Care’s coordinated entry process, where she helps to identify additional housing resources for veterans and families experiencing homelessness in El Paso County. In her spare time, she loves to connect with nature, practice yoga, and explore the awesome and ever-growing food scene that Colorado Springs has to offer.

How to go Caving with Dave Jackson

Dave Jackson is the inventor of CaveSim, a life-sized artificial cave that you crawl through, coupled with electronic
sensors to give you feedback on your careful caving skills. It can be used both for fun and for rescue training. Dave holds two patents on cave simulators, with additional patents pending. Dave has a background in electrical engineering at MIT, which he uses in the construction and maintenance of the caves. While attending MIT, he joined the outing and caving clubs, and after moving to Colorado, he and his wife joined the local caving club and began learning about cave search and rescue. This inspired him to build an artificial cave and make a business out of it.

Joy Armstrong is the Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center (FAC). She is the winner of the Colorado Springs Business Journal’s Women of Influence Award for 2016. She holds a Masters of Art degree in Art History, and she’s the recipient of the “Excellence in Curatorship” and the “Creative, Intriguing, Astonishing” awards from the Pikes Peak Arts Council. Locally, she has been deeply involved with GOCA, Harley’s Hope Foundation, and Imagination Celebration.

Scott Levy is the Executive Director of Performing Arts and Producing Artistic Director of the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center Theatre Company. He is a producer, director, and performer with experience off Broadway, in New York, at Shakespeare’s Globe in London, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland, and in over 60 cities across North America. He too has won two Pikes Peak Arts Council awards. Under his leadership, the FAC Theatre Company became the largest professional theatre in Southern Colorado and has been named the Best Theatre Company in the Springs by The Gazette for the past two years.

But after graduating college Randi returned to Colorado Springs where she met and married a man who took her to all the outdoor destinations she should have visited sooner. Her hobbies include running, bike riding, stand-up paddle boarding, and camping with her husband Steve, their son, and their dog.

She taught physical education for eight years before becoming a professional adventurer. Randi now works as the Chief Operating Officer of the outdoor adventure nonprofit UpaDowna.

How to Have a Nice Dog with Lauren Fox

Lauren Fox rescues and re-homes more than 100 dogs per year. She leads trainings and seminars at animal shelters, schools, libraries and veterinary practices. She’s taught high school and college-level courses in animal behavior. She’s clicker trained and rehabilitated hundreds of animals, including many breeds of dogs, wolves, cats, parrots, horses and donkeys. She teaches group classes and provides private consultations, evaluations, and counseling.

She currently shares her home with five dogs, a cat, an umbrella cockatoo, three donkeys, one horse, two 15-year-old human children and one amazing spouse. Lauren has personally fostered over 100 dogs, and has held the leadership role in her organization All Breed Rescue and Training, since 1998.

About the Show and its Mission

Idea Accelerator Podcast exists to tap into the wisdom of local thought leaders and entrepreneurs, and share their advice with the community.

The content is designed for those who are looking for ways to improve themselves and get more involved in the Colorado Springs community. Many listeners are fellow business owners enjoy the inspiration and great ideas that they get from the podcast.

Lauren had the idea for this show based on her experience as a business owner running Live Dream Colorado. While often exciting, liberating, and rewarding, running a business has a lot of unique challenges that sometimes only other business owners can understand and help with. We, as business owners, are always searching for ways to take our products and service to the next level.

Toward that goal, Lauren designed the podcast as a success-building platform. It’s a jumping-off point for meaningful discussions in the Colorado Springs business community among leaders and aspiring leaders who want to help one another become better, share advice on avoiding and solving problems in business, lend a hand to aspiring business owners, and give back to their community through their unique knowledge and experience.

Another great thing about local business owners is that they are often very familiar with the community. They have great suggestions of where to go and what to do for fun, entertainment, and recreation, as well as for business networking and for volunteering, donating, and contributing.

The focus of the interviews is on the small business owner’s and entrepreneur’s journey. By speaking with them about their journey to becoming a leader, we all get to learn an incredible amount from their successes, failures, experiences and advice.

Drew Johnson is a Colorado Springs born entrepreneur and recyclopath. He has served in many leadership roles and has co-founded several environmental organizations. Currently, Drew is focused on his eco fashion startup, TechWears and serves as a board director of Peak Alliance for a Sustainable Future.

How to Preserve Colorado Springs’ Open Space with Susan Davies

Colorado Springs is known for our natural open spaces and our extensive parks and trails. How do we preserve these areas? How do we can we take care of them and get more of them?

If you want to learn about some of the up-and-coming visions for the trail systems in Colorado Springs…If you want to better understand how our park maintenance is funded…If you want to learn how to get involved with protecting and maintaining our open space…If you want to learn more about the people who do this work in town, you’ll want to listen to this podcast!

For the past twenty-seven years the Trails and Open Space Coalition has worked to preserve open space and parks, and create a network of trails, bikeways and greenways for the Pikes Peak region. TOSC has roughly one thousand members, dozens of local partners, supports 20 regional Friends Groups and has been instrumental in preserving thousands of acres of open space plus creating hundreds of miles of trails. Susan is Executive Director of the Trails and Open Space Coalition.

Prior to joining TOSC in August of 2009, Susan was a television news journalist/weather anchor and worked in various TV Markets in Green Bay, Wi; Syracuse, NY; Pittsburgh, PA; Cleveland, Ohio and finally Colorado Springs at KOAA. During her years in Pittsburgh and Cleveland she did some fill-in weather anchoring for Good Morning America. She also developed a passion for environmental reporting and completed a graduate degree in Environmental Science and Management at Duquesne University.

Susan lives with her husband Bill and 10^th grade daughter Elizabeth in Monument. You’ll often find them hiking in Red Open Canyon or North Cheyenne Canon.

How to Publish a Magazine in Colorado Springs with John Sawyer

Does Colorado Springs deserve its own magazine? John Sawyer thinks so!

From beautiful scenery to microbreweries to Olympic training to local art and coffee shops, Colorado Springs can absolutely fill the pages of a full color glossy magazine, according to John. He’s worked hard to make this vision a reality and has now launched Springs magazine!

John Sawyer grew up in New York about an hour outside The City. Then, moved to Connecticut to finish high school at boarding school called Taft. He went to Emory University in Atlanta. Loved the South and life in Atlanta (especially the warm weather and music scene). Spent his junior year abroad in Fribourg, Switzerland, and had a terrific time traveling Europe and experiencing all the different culture.

John began his career in publishing a couple of years after graduating from Emory. He met my wife, Pam, who after a couple of years of dating had the opportunity with her job to go to London. So, John went with her, and he worked for a publisher in the financial district. Together they traveled a lot and spent some time in pubs.

They returned to Atlanta where they started a family – they have 2 boys and a girl. John continued his work in publishing, primarily in ad sales, but then in developing web sites for a magazine publisher. He went off on his own 11 years ago, launching a restaurant trade magazine and then taking over a trade magazine for physicians.

Pam had the opportunity to join the US Olympic Committee. They couldn’t pass that up, and the idea of living in Colorado was exciting. John was able to move my work and magazines with me. Over the past couple of years, John developed the idea of a new lifestyle magazine for Colorado Springs. He has now launched his vision, Springs magazine.

What if you’re a young professional looking to get started in this town – how about some tips and tricks for getting your dream job? Chelsy shares her insight from her experiences as a young professional in Colorado Springs.

Chelsy Offutt is the Director of Communications for the Colorado Springs Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB). She served as the Public Relations Society of America Pikes Peak Chapter President in 2014, and has been on the board since 2011. Her previous experience includes work with national auto dealer and real estate advertising agency ProConcepts, the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) and Cumulus Radio (formerly Citadel Broadcasting).

Chelsy handles media and community relations, communications and social media for the CVB. This includes proactively generating awareness of and interest in Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak Region as a leisure, business and event travel destination.

She holds a BA with honors in Communications, emphasis in Media Management, from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.
